2016 Chevrolet Silverado vs. The 2016 Ram 1500

2016 Ram 1500
You probably realize that the 2016 Chevy Silverado and the 2016 Ram 1500 are both full size pickups. These two trucks are among the most popular vehicles in America, and both offer plenty of capability and capacity. So which do you choose?
When it comes to fuel economy, it’s obvious that estimates will vary considerably depending on the configuration you choose. While both of these vehicles offer a solid 20 mpg combined estimate with base V6 engine and rear-wheel drive, the Silverado does better when it comes to V8 efficiency. Decide to drive the V8 powered Silverado and you’ll find up to 19 mpg combined, while the V8 powered Ram checks in at only 16 mpg combined with base transmission.
Power and Capacity
One important factor for any truck buyer is power output and hauling capability. The Chevy Silverado is available with a 6.2L V8 that cranks out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The Ram 1500 is available with a 5.7L V8 that makes only 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque.
Partly due to the power difference, the Ram lags behind in hauling capacity with only 10,640 pounds of towing capacity with the V8, and 1,890 pounds of payload capacity. The Silverado when properly equipped can trailer up to 12,000 pounds, and can haul up to 2,140 pounds in the bed.
The Chevrolet Silverado earned a best possible 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Ram 1500 earned a 4-Star overall rating, with 4-star ratings in many tests, and only a 3-star rating in rollover safety when equipped with all-wheel drive. The Chevy is also available with a forward collision warning system—something that’s simply not on offer with the Ram.
