2016 Chevrolet Traverse vs. 2016 Ford Explorer
The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse and the 2016 Ford Explorer are both top crossovers and both should give you the versatility you want from a three-row SUV. That doesn’t mean that they’re equals, however. We know that you want the vehicle with the most up-to-date technology, the latest safety features, and the best powertrain options. We’ve compared these vehicles side by side so you can have a better idea of how they stack up.
Powertrains and Efficiency
Take a peek under the hood of these two crossovers and you’ll find similar powertrains. The Explorer gets a 3.5L V6 engine that makes 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque and the EPA estimates that it will yield 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway with front wheel drive. The Traverse makes up to 288 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque with its 3.6L V6 engine, and nets exactly the same EPA estimate of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway. The extra torque in the Traverse helps the Chevy tow more than the Ford Explorer with a maximum rating of up to 5,200 pounds, when properly equipped. The Ford will only pull up to 5,000 pounds. Another advantage that the Chevy has? A bigger fuel tank—with 22 gallons of capacity and identical fuel economy numbers, the Traverse will require fewer fill-ups than the Explorer with its 18.6 gallon tank.
Seating and Space
One big advantage that the Traverse offers over the Explorer? Seating. The Traverse can seat up to 8 passengers, while the Explorer will only seat up to 7 passengers. The Traverse also brings you a lot more cargo space than the Ford Explorer. When all the seats are in use, the Traverse can carry up to 24.4 cubic feet of cargo, while the Explorer tops out at 21 cubic feet. When you fold the seats down, the distance between the two gets even greater: the Traverse can haul a maximum of 116.3 cubic feet while the Explorer comes up short with only 80.7 cubic feet of space.
